Xylitol Poisoning

Xylitol a common ingredient — one you might not realize can be fatal to your dog.

It is not dangerous for people to ingest so generally we don’t think twice about it when we are purchasing our food.

Xylitol is a sugar substitute found in many sugar-free products such as:

● Gum and mints
● Baked goods
● Some peanut and nut butters
● Toothpaste and mouthwash
● Chewable vitamins
● Certain medications

While xylitol is safe for humans, it is extremely toxic to dogs, even in small amounts.
It can cause:

● A rapid drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
● Vomiting
● Weakness or collapse
● Seizures
● Liver failure
● Brain damage
● And in severe cases, death

Symptoms can appear in as little as 15–30 minutes after ingestion. If you suspect your dog has consumed something containing xylitol, this is a true emergency — seek veterinary care immediately.

Please check ingredient labels, especially on products you may share with your pet.
